Keeping Children Safe Online

At Earley St Peter's, we recognise the importance of online safety and ensuring our pupils navigate the digital world in a  responsible and respectful way. By teaching them how to recognise risks, protect personal information and make positive choices online, we help them develop lifelong digital resilience. Through age-appropriate lessons and open discussions, we empower our children to use technology in ways that enhance their learning while staying safe.

Supporting Online Safety at Home
We believe that online safety is a shared responsibility, and parents play a vital role in reinforcing safe online habits beyond school. We encourage parents to:

  • Monitor their child’s online activities and discuss the importance of responsible internet use.
  • Set appropriate boundaries, such as screen time limits and privacy settings.
  • Talk openly about potential online risks, including cyberbullying and inappropriate content.

By working together, we can create a safe digital environment where children thrive both in school and at home.

The school has run an online workshop for all parents on Parenting in a Digital World through The Stay Safe Initiative.

Some of the key messages focussed on:

• Talking to our children! We need to nurture an invested interest, be curious, ask questions and be involved with
what they are doing online. Do find out what they enjoy doing online.
• Embracing the digital world and guide our children in partnership, by discussing, agreeing and setting boundaries
together. What can be used and when?
• Show integrity and empathy when things go wrong online. The fear of losing a device may mean some children
won’t speak out about any issues they may have encountered.
• Lead by excellence, by displaying positive habits. Set times in the day when devices aren’t used e.g. during meals
and in bedrooms and always put your device down when talking to someone.
• Carefully consider that many social media apps are not designed to be used by anyone under 13 years old.
• Try and hold off before giving your primary age child a mobile phone or device of their own. There is nothing wrong
with them using a family device to keep in contact with friends.
